back pain and chiropractic

Chiropractic, the best ally for back pain

Back pain is not a disease but a set of symptoms, being one of the main causes of sick leave in several countries around the world, including Spain.

Back pain can affect people of all ages and can begin both suddenly and progressively, in both cases the pain can become intense and become a chronic problem.

This condition is often treated with the use of medication, but there are natural and effective options for relief, such as chiropractic.

In this article, you will get the following information about back pain:

  • Importance of the spine
  • Types of back pain
  • Causes of back pain
  • Symptoms of back pain
  • Back pain can be prevented
  • How chiropractic can help you

Importance of the spine

The nerve system is made by the brain, the spinal cord and thousands of nerves which are like an electric grid in the human body. It tasks is to transmit information from the brain to all cells, muscles and organs.

All vital functions, conscious and unconscious, such as breathing, walking, heartbeat or digesting, depend on the precision of the nerve impulses that travel through the spinal cord, housed in the spine.

Information needed by the brain runs through the vertebral column, and allows a correct body functioning. In addition, they connect back muscles and the ribs.

If a vertebra moves and pitch any nerve, it produces a subluxation or a vertebral block. This can affect intervertebral discs and, after time, it can provoke many pathologies if we don’t correct them.

Keeping the spine healthy and flexible favours the balance of the nervous system and enhances health.

Types of back pain

  • Lumbar Pain or Lumbalgia: pain located in the lumbar area, the most common problem is usually sciatica, pain that radiates through the leg, along the path of the sciatic nerve.
  • Dorsal Pain, pain located in the dorsal area.
  • Cervical Pain or Cervicalgia, pain located in the cervical area, the most common reason is usually stiff neck.

What is the difference between acute pain and chronic pain?

Acute pain

  • Duration less than 3-4 months
  • Sudden, intense, localized pain
  • When the reason that caused it is resolved, the pain disappears.

Chronic pain

  • Duration more than 3 months
  • Permanent and recurring pain
  • It affects the quality of life of the person who suffers from it
  • Sometimes pain persists after lesions have healed, with no apparent biological cause.
  • Causes depression

Causes of back pain

Several causes can be identified that can cause back pain:

  • Accidents, trauma, blows, falls
  • Degeneration of the vertebrae or as one ages, which may begin at 30-40 years of age.
  • Having a low physical condition is more common among people with a sedentary lifestyle.
  • The overweight, the overload of the back loads and therefore wears out the spine.
  • Stress, when we are under stress our breathing is not correct. It is a survival breath that causes tension throughout the body. Over time, it causes muscle tension which in turn causes pain and joint dysfunction.
  • Diseases such as: Scoliosis, Herniated disc, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Lumbar and cervical stenosis, Ankylosing spondylolisthesis, etc.
  • Bone dysmetria, limb length discrepancy (one leg higher than the other)
  • Bad posture

Symptoms of back pain

The most common symptoms are the following:

  • Dull or sharp pain
  • Tingling and/or numbness
  • Muscle tension
  • Pain that radiates down the leg
  • Burning or stinging
  • Intense pain
  • Difficulty moving or standing
  • Punctures in the back
  • Rib pain that can radiate to the chest
  • Pain when breathing

Can back pain be prevented?

The spine wears out on its own and evolves according to age, but there are measures we can take to prevent/avoid back pain.

  • Exercise regularly
  • Strengthen muscles, ligaments and tendons
  • Maintain correct posture
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Keep a healthy weight

How can chiropractic help you?

The chiropractic, by correcting subluxations (joint dysfunctions), restores the proper functioning of the vertebrae, relieving pain and providing a long-term solution. It is an effective and safe solution to improve spinal health and overall health.

How many chiropractic sessions are necessary?

Number of sessions depend on your health status and your healing capacity.

During the first weeks, sessions will be more often. As soon as you will improve, sessions take place less often.

If you suffer from back pain, or related symptoms, we recommend that you consult with a chiropractor.

In Spain, if you are looking for a chiropractor, verify that they are a member of the Asociación Española de Quiropráctica (AEQ), which brings together exclusively Chiropractic graduates with a university degree issued by one of the Chiropractic universities recognized by the European Council of Chiropractic Education.
